What's the brain of any company? The data center. Because they dictate how an organization runs, that's one of the reasons why they're often called "control rooms." Since there's an increasing demand for electronic data and information exchange, data centers are becoming more crucial. So what do you think it's like to work in a data center?

With more and more companies moving toward storing information in the cloud, that means someone needs to maintain the hardware and software, often from a remote location, known as the data center or server farm. But don't expect data center jobs to be like any other job. There's a very unique environment, along with the distinct rows of control room furniture. Check out a glimpse of what it's like to be employed for a data center.

One, you'll hear weird sounds. There's a whole lot of electric activity going on, since these sections are home to house servers, devices, and connections via cables. Consider it like one big box fan, in terms of its hum. You won't be distracted by it because you'll be focused on your work.

Second, there’s the solitude. Like to be on your own? Data centers are where loners thrive. Even though they may seem huge, especially with the rows of technical furniture, most data centers are relatively tiny, with only 10 people working at once. During the night, probably fewer than 10. However, you'll probably have to work weird hours, keeping hardware and copper connections up-to-date.

Pro: You get to work in a mild office, temperature-wise. With so much equipment and support riding on a data center (like the cloud and e-commerce transactions, for example), the temperature has to be even-keeled. Equipment could be destroyed from extreme heat, which is why temperature control is important. You'll never have to be concerned about getting too hot in the office. Leave the office fan at home.

Safe and secure are two ways people often describe data centers. Like some magical place, data centers are located in areas designed to avoid disaster or catastrophe. If something were to go wrong outside of the building, you probably wouldn’t even feel it. Thus, when you're working in "the office," you're in the safest possible area of the edifice.

In today's society, whether it's managing utilities or producing a broadcast, control rooms or data centers serve a variety of purposes. With little natural light and exposure to the outside world, it may seem like you're in the center of a maze. But you have exclusive membership to a restricted club. Not many people can get in---only people like you. Think of yourself as like Batman in the Data-cave.
