How to Make a Grape Trellis Depending on the size of vineyard you wish to grow, that should determine the size of your trellis. When growing grapes in your backyard, you will want to have a smaller trellis than a commercial grower would. In order to create them successfully, you will want to do several rows parallel to each other. Place each pole about four feet apart and level with the ground. Be sure that each pole is anchored into the ground.You can use an auger to dig your holes, but make sure that you dig it deep enough. You will want to make sure that your auger has the right diameter as the pole you are using for your trellis. If you use an auger, you will not need to use any concrete to hold it in place. Instead you can just brace them with wire, dirt or another pole.

Since you will need to run wire through each pole, you will want to pre-drill holes prior to placing your poles in the dirt. If you drill your poles after they are already in the dirt, you can run the risk of shifting them. After your poles are in place you can run your wires through each pole. Ensure that your wire is tight so that it can hold the weight of your grapevines. If your wires do not have enough support they can collapse and kill your grapevines.
